Founded in 1838, the Centraal Museum Utrecht is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. Its permanent exhibitions combine modern art with urban history and fashion, offering 16 themed tours on the ground and first floors. Here you'll find everything from medieval artefacts to avant-garde pieces.
One of the museum's gems is the original studio of Dick Bruna, creator of Miffy, where you can see his creative process and some of his iconic sketches. Nearby, the Gerrit Rietveld furniture collection shows you the legacy of Utrecht's most influential architect and designer.
The Caravaggist Utrecht School is represented with several paintings that reveal Caravaggio's influence on the city, while the Moesman, Viktor & Rolf gallery and the exhibition dedicated to the 1000-year-old Utrecht ship in the basement provide a fascinating contrast between the past and the contemporary.
