Step by Step

At the Speelklok Museum in Utrecht you will discover one of the most comprehensive collections of automated instruments in the world, spanning from the 17th century to the modern era. Each room houses automatons, orchestrions and barrel organs restored to sound just as they did centuries ago, creating a lively atmosphere to the rhythm of cogwheels and music cylinders.

Your tour begins as you walk through the front door: press the button on the nearest automaton and watch as gears set drums, bells and flutes in a mechanical symphony. You'll learn how the restoration team keeps these jewels in perfect condition, and you can play on the interactive panels to understand the intricate technique of each mechanism.

Children and adults alike will be fascinated by the "musical robots", life-size automatons that play baroque and melodic pieces with astonishing precision. From time to time, you will hear the glockenspiel and the large music boxes, whose choreographed movements tell stories in harmony.

Don't miss the Arabic organs and the violin, instruments remarkable for their rarity and richness of timbre. Guided tours, available in Dutch and English every hour and a half, will allow you to delve into anecdotes such as the "Handsome" dog patrol or the music boxes that travelled on steam trains.

On the first Wednesday of every month, the Restoration Room opens its doors to show you the workshop where experts bring these mechanisms back to life. And when you need a break, enjoy free lemonade in the café, surrounded by sheet music and historic renovations.
