Step by Step
The tour begins at the Colonia Güell visitor centre, where the guide will introduce you to the historical and social context of the place. You'll learn how the Colonia was conceived as a workers' community by Eusebi Güell, who hired Gaudí to design a church that was ultimately left incomplete, although its crypt became a laboratory of ideas.
During the guided tour you will enter Gaudí's Crypt, a World Heritage Site, where many of the architect's formal innovations are applied for the first time: parabolic arches, slanted columns, luminous stained glass windows and decorative details inspired by nature. Every architectural element, every window and every bench reflects his unique approach to organic design.
Afterwards you will visit the permanent exhibition located in the visitor centre building. There you will learn how the building was designed, see models, historical images and explanatory panels that relate the structure of the crypt to modern architecture. You'll also tour the exterior of the Colonia Güell, admiring the modernist buildings that housed workers' dwellings, community spaces and the textile factory.
Your guide will show you how Gaudí cleverly adapted the materials and site, integrating the architecture with the surrounding landscape. You will see details in situ of the use of stone, brick, the walls, the windows and the shades that dialogue with the vegetation and the topography. It is a visual, architectural and emotional experience, designed for those who are looking for more than a superficial visit.
