Step by Step
Embark on a half-day cultural tour that combines the best of Lao crafts and cuisine. You'll start with a vintage tuk-tuk pick-up from your hotel in central Luang Prabang, a 10-minute drive to a picturesque pavilion built in the traditional Lao style.
Upon arrival, your English-speaking guide will welcome you and explain the age-old relationship between the local community and bamboo - from fishing tools to musical instruments. You will then learn how to sharpen knives and cut bamboo into strips, before weaving your own souvenir mat. You will find the "overlapping" weaving technique relaxing and rewarding, thanks to the patient help of your instructor.
In the second part, you will discover why bamboo shoot is a staple ingredient in Lao cuisine. In a hands-on demonstration, you'll collaborate with a local chef to prepare bamboo shoot soup, steamed bamboo shoots in banana leaf and a traditional dip. Each step will bring you closer to the authentic flavours of the region.
After the workshop, enjoy your dishes on the pavilion terrace, surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. You will have time to relax, chat with the locals and learn some traditional games before returning by tuk-tuk to your hotel, loaded with new skills and flavours.
